Trip Planner:   Europe  /  Belarus  /  Minsk  /  GUM
At GUM--essentially a department store--peruse the aisles for souvenirs such as Russian dolls and handpainted boxes. The building is a typical example of Socialist Realism and serves as a 20th-century architectural landmark. The department store was built in 1951. It offers clothes, shoes, toys, cosmetics, souvenirs, household appliances, and more. Look for Soviet-style radios or digital Elektronika watches--a must for collectors of kitsch. • I, as an Aboriginal of Minsk, can say that there is nothing to take in Gume. Soviet, in a bad sense, a store where a lot of local producers. The surcharge is 30%, so it is not cheap. Better local to take in branded stores. If you can buy here, it is a Belarusian cosmetics (really a big choice, but more expensive than in other stores), materials for sewing and jewelry (suddenly). Usually in the department store tourists and residents of small towns. From the locals here go only elderly people (apparently, nostalgic).

  • Amazing classical Soviet architecture and fantastic stairway. A step back in time. Goods a little dated.  more »

  • You can find absolutely anything here, from toothpicks to clothes. It’s located in the center of the city just by the metro station, really convenient. It’s probably the most famous department store in Minsk, because it’s always crowded, which makes the shopping hard, sometimes unpleasant. Long queues also don’t help if you’re in a hurry. But, oh well, I guess you would expect it from a store with that kind of reputation.
  • A centrally located all-in-one store offers a decent variety of goods and services. One of the best places in Minsk to find souvenirs at any price range. There is also a small grocery section on the first floor in case you are thirsty (mostly because they offer only snacks). Staff is helpful but mind that many will not understand any language other than Russian.
