Island of Tears, Minsk

#4 of 187 in Things to do in Minsk
At Island of Tears, a sculpture of a guardian angel cries for Belarusian soldiers who died in the war in Afghanistan. Cross a flying arch bridge to get to the artificial island, also known as the "island of courage and sorrow." You'll see a large boulder with a bronze icon of the Mother of God at its entrance. In the center of the island is a memorial chapel surrounded by statues of mourning widows, mothers, and sisters. There are more than 770 names of Belarusians who died in Afghanistan inscribed on the walls of the chapel. The island’s surface is uneven; the many stones are meant to represent Afghan mountains. Willows, leaning over the water, symbolize sorrow. • If you walk across the river, you will see the monument already standing the Island of Tears for war victims. The grieving women all have different looks, but you can see that they have great sadness. Look at the monument, then see a beautiful mural. Very impressive!

  • Monument located on a small island. The most interesting is the surroundings. Of course, there is particular interest to those who know the purpose of the monument, but not worth it for themselves.

  • Although it is a somber place, it is nice to sit and contemplate the view of the city. Worth a visit.
  • Very moving monument - quite intense to visit as then one can almost feel the emotions that the statues of widows, mothers, sisters and daughters transmit. Very important to remember that not all is glory in the death of a soldier - and to remember all he left behind.
