Praia de Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro

4.6
#2 of 4,705 in Outdoors in Brazil
A long stretch of warm sand, Praia de Ipanema is divided into segments by posts ("postos," as they’re known locally), which mark diverse lifestyles and interests of beachgoers from around the world. Posto 9 attracts visitors intent on spending the day leisurely relaxing on the sand, while Posto 10 draws sports lovers with ongoing volleyball, soccer, and footvolley games. Food kiosks stay open all day long, with beer and the traditional cachaça sold right on the water’s edge. Constant swells keep the water clean all year round, with a frequent strong undertow and oversized waves. Always be careful on this beach, and swim only where the locals do. Remember that on the weekends the sand does get very crowded, so go early to stake a good spot. • The Ipanema beach is still splendid and is an unrivaled attraction. Unlike your neighbor and sister Copacabana, it is quieter during the week and less frequed. Well organized kiosks divide the sand.

  • Beautiful beach. Small, little space between umbrellas. Full of street vendors but worth knowing. Prices vary according to the seller and nationality of the buyer. Speaking of which they lower the price a little. Two lounge chairs and a 20 real umbrella.

  • This beach is amazing to watch people surf. The waves are pretty strong at times too. Lots of people around but you can always find somewhere to sit and before you can sit someone comes to you selling you an umbrella for 10 reals to gives you shade from the sun. Water is nice and clean. There are volley ball and football areas too.. lots of security around in case anything was to go wrong. Also some beautiful views atop the rocks.
  • My favourite between Copacabana and Ipanema, far more laid back vibe, beautiful sunsets, great swim, and I discovered an outdoor gym at the Copacabana end of this beach. Also has phenomenal views of both sugar loaf mountain and Christ the Redeemer from the rock at the far end of the beach alongside Fort Copacabana
