Founded at the turn of the 13th century by Khmer emperor Jayavarman VII, Ta Prohm remains untouched and well preserved, largely owing to its status as a World Heritage Site. The temple, first established as a Buddhist monastery and university, stood abandoned for centuries, during which silk-cotton trees and strangler figs pushed out of its foundations and grew upward, burying the stone buildings in tangles of exposed roots. The ruins include hundreds of statues to various gods, former monks' residences, and stone towers, all intertwined with tree roots in an unforgettable visual effect. Parts of the trails that run through the temple are dark or impassable; use a map or follow a guide to stay on track. Made even popular by being featured in the movie Tomb Raider, Ta Prohm is truly an awesome sight to see. The roots of the trees perfectly fitted itself in the nooks and crannies of the temple creating a wonderful and amazing harmony. The roots became a part of the temples thus creating an artistic design created by nature herself. Musical instruments such as flute were played in the entrance of the temple thus creating a magical vibe. Restorations were done during our visit. Some parts of the temple had already crumbled due to age but a restoration project was done. It was three years ago, maybe right now that part of the temple was already restored. The energy of the place is quite strong actually and it is not in a bad way. Just the mere thought of how this place was once a symbol of power and where powerful people lived is really awesome!
Much too famous for its own good, hordes of tourists. To take these pictures, I waited and waited for a break in the flow and then took a quick snap. I wish they never made a movie here. Hire a local guide and visit a remote temple that you can enjoy in peace.
