Although its eye-catching spires rise imposingly over the city's skyline, the main attraction of Strahov Monastery remains its library, containing thousands of editions of the Bible. Established in the 1140s for the Premonstratensian religious order, the monastery functioned until 1950, when the Communist regime closed it down and imprisoned most of its monks. Returned to the order in 1989, the monastery underwent massive architectural restorations to repair damage caused by years of neglect. Inside the monastery's main gate, you can visit a 17th-century church, housing a valuable collection of artworks from the Gothic era, and the famed library's two halls. Linked by an elaborately decorated passage, the two halls contain a collection of nearly 3,000 original manuscripts. The virtual tour in internet is better. You have to pay ticket to see the libraries but you can only see from distance, not visit. You can see the view for free, just go around the monastery and... more »

Beautiful and easy to reach from the tram (22). The library we couldn't visit because it was reserved for other guests, which we understand is fairly usual. The gallery inside the monastery is beautiful (ancient walls and chambers). From 11.30 to 13.00 the public is not allowed to be inside the different buildings. The view over the city from the mountain is magnificent!

Small monastery with great views over town and cute buildings. They make their own beer and the restaurants on the property serve it. It’s a bit of a mall up from the river so you’ll be thirsty and hungry so it’s the right combination!
