Covered Bazaar, Massawa

#2 of 6 in Historic Sites in Massawa
Located in the commercial part of the city, Covered Bazaar used to be a prominent street market, but today only the remains of its most famous part--the roof--still stand. The bazaar was built in the Turkish period, in the shape of a boat, with intricate decorations and engravings. Now you can visit and imagine the smells, colors, and the buzz that used to fill the air here. Plans to renovate the bazaar could see it recapture its former glory.
