Andechs Monastery, Andechs

4.4
Discover the intersection of fine Baroque architecture and the art of brewing beer at the idyllic Andechs Monastery. Perched atop a hill overlooking Ammer lake, the monastery features an impressive 18th century church. This is the oldest pilgrimage site in Bavaria, as well as a fully functioning brewery. You can take a brewery tour to learn about the monks' brewing tradition. You'll be able to taste the seven varieties of local beer, then have a traditional Bavarian lunch at the onsite restaurant. Wander the grounds to take in the spectacular views of the countryside. • We visited Andechs Monastery on a rainy day in late August, 2017. We got there early just before noon, so we were able to wander around and get pictures without people in the background. The tower was...  more »
  • Got a lot of fun. First from walking distance from Herrshinga to the monastery, and then from the monastery's fine beer. It is a pity that in monasteries in Russia do not cook this beer is bringing me with their existence)))

  • Of course, it is the absolute sanctuary in Bavaria! The whole monastery with the Church are impressive. Probably the one who there is very early, or just caught a quiet day. The size of the parking lot gives an idea of what's happening here on holidays or in summer. One hopes at a glance to the Ammersee you will be disappointed because the trees prevent significantly every look there. Who travels with a larger group and want to eat here, should be sure to reserve a table in one of the guest houses. The beer is of course absolutely recommended and should therefore be either a constant sober riders or just the journey on foot (from Herrsching from 1 hour) or with the bus (approx. 15 min.). But beware: The dishes are much more expensive than in Herrsching sin! At the roast pork with dumplings, the difference of partial 5,00 euro! Because you must think about it already! "Holy rum or num!" Conclusion: Nice destination for church-goers are a must if you're in the area, beer a must for beer drinkers - have fun!

  • This may be my single favorite place in Germany (or anywhere for that matter). The food is excellent and reasonably priced - though the portions tend toward the over-generous - bring your appetite or a friend! This is coupled with what is perhaps the best beer in Germany. Just up the hill is an entirely different experience - a lovely baroque church with a completely different focus than the Biergarten mere steps away. It is a bit of a hike up the hill, but more than worth it. This is the one place I ALWAYS go when I am in Germany.
  • We found our best adventures happen when we get a referral and when we keep an open mind. Luckily a friend of ours referred Andechs Monastery to us, otherwise we never would have visited. The Benedictine monastery is located little more than one hour way from Munich. So we took a small day trip from Munich taking the S Bahn plus a local bus. The monastery is in the centre of a small village (here), including a Gothic church (here), brewery and gift shop. The beautiful Gothic church is from the 1400’s and has attracted pilgrims and tourists from around the world. Andechs Monastery is also a well-known cultural centre and for it’s seven varieties of Andechs Monastery beer and gastronomy. We visited the village and stayed for lunch in the Klostergasthof restaurant. Curious about German culture, we were ready for the typical German gastronomy and the local beer. It was fun and well priced for a big meal. It was crowded since we visited on a Sunday afternoon, yet we managed to share a table with a nice couple from Italy (cheers). We discovered that we could communicate in French. And so, a new connection was made ! The small village is really beautiful and fun to visit. Make sure to visit the church, the small gift shop for a small souvenir (also to encourage the Monastery), the restaurant for a meal or a beer tasting (offered for groups after a brewery tour). • Lovely place! the food is tasty, the beer is cold and refreshing and the panorama is relaxing... a couple of hours here during a nice summer day is time well spent.
  • Great atmosphere and really good value for and drinks. Though popular it is never full
  • My beer "Mecca" the outdoor seating, food, beer and beautiful scenery will make a visit extra memorable! Go now, it's worth the drive!!
