Brandenburg Gate, Berlin

4.5
#2 of 16,219 in Things to do in Germany
Brandenburg Gate was built in the 18th century as a defining symbol of the city, but it ended up in the middle of the no-man’s land separating East and West Germany for the better part of the 20th century. Today, this impressive monument epitomizes European unification and continued peace. It often serves as an attractive backdrop for special events, such as concerts. Architect Carl Gotthard Langhans designed the triumphal arch, finding inspiration in classical Greek architecture. He chose this spot to serve as the entry into the city’s renowned boulevard of linden trees. Artist Johan Gottfried Schadow’s sculpture of a winged goddess commanding a chariot crowns the gate. • Beautiful structure, which was surrounded by Palisades for repairing and preparing an act by the reunification of Germany. But the stupid human suspended what should be a fesdtejo since groups fundamentalists did shut down. A pity.

  • Definitely worth a visit if you are sightseeing in Berlin with other landmarks in the area that are easy to walk to within 10 minutes or so, like the Reichstag, Unter Den Linden, the various governmen...  more »
  • What a big place! Impressive and wonderful! It was a pity that the day we went there, the police had cut off some roads and could not access it.

  • Amazing, simply amazing. If you're interested in German history, especially that of the Prussian empire, this is an essential visit. I'd recommend also seeing it at night, as well as the day. At night, there are significantly less people, and you get to see the Tor beautifully lit up.
  • One of the most beautiful architecture pieces I've seen. Nearby you can find other historical landmarks that are rather interesting such as the Holocaust memorial. The best time to visit is close to sunset, when you can see the monument light up and the streets are flooded with artists under its golden glow
  • Always a great view. I enjoyed my sightseeing in Berlin with all its highlights this being one of them. Great picture op used by millions of tourists. Definitely will have to return and catch the sunset through the gate/arches again.
  • The top place and also the most visited in Berlin. A beautiful gate with great history. Really well organized place and very clean. It's always crowded but I don't think it could be any different. Of course it's highly recommended to visit it and have some great photos. Don't forget to visit it also by night. It's beautifully lighted.
  • The Brandenburg Gate is one of the most famous sightseeing objects in Germany. I just can say that it is pretty impressive to see the dimensions of that huge gate. Great stop for doing an unforgettable picture of your Germany trip. If you have time, come back after the sunset to see the Brandenburg Gate illuminated.
