Pressed up against the fallen Berlin Wall, Friedrichshain was once home to squatters and artists after the wall fell. Mass evictions cleared these groups out, but the neighborhood continued to thrive as a trendy district and has become a fashionable place to live. On the end of the borough opposite the wall, in the Volkspark Friedrichshain, you'll find a largely landscaped park that houses sites like the Fairytale Fountain, as well as a memorial to Polish and anti-Fascist German soldiers. The main boulevard is lined with shops and beer gardens that fill up on warm afternoons. Don't miss the East Side Gallery, an outdoor art gallery located at the base of a remaining piece of the Berlin Wall. Residential area, quite laid back and chill, some nice eateries and one nice park. Good area for a restful hotel stay. The hip neighborhood is just across the Spree, Kreuzberg-Friedrichshain. more »
