Grunewald Forest, Berlin

#4 of 16 in Nature in Berlin
Forest · Hidden Gem · Park
A sprawling, forested area in the western part of the city, Grunewald Forest is a paradise of greenery and peace that attracts strollers, bikers, and picnickers. Rich in lakes and ponds, the forest covers about 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres), offering sweeping views of the surrounding urban areas from its tallest point, the 117 m (384 ft) high Taufelsberg Hill. Named after one of the oldest remaining royal palaces in the city, the forest was one of the favorite stomping grounds of the Prussian rulers, who started hunting in the area in the early 16th century. Returned to its former glory after extensive restoration efforts, the palace is now filled with old furniture and works of art, with a small exhibit on royal hunts open to the public.
