Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, Berlin

4.5
#4 of 184 in Museums in Berlin
Originally opened in 1895, Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church today stands as a memorial to the destruction of World War II. This historic chapel was damaged--then almost completely eliminated--by bombings in 1943 and 1945. The remaining Romanesque architecture is in the steeple, which no longer has a pointed roof. The ground floor's memorial hall honors war victims. The people of Berlin preserved the ruins within the monument to represent the rebirth and resilience of postwar Berlin. • The Church of the memory of the Emperor William is located at the Kurfürstendamm avenue famous lla entrance. Heavily bombed during the second world war, the Church has retained only the entrance porch, the wall of the apse, a rear Tower and the ruins of the steeple cut back, Berliners called "hollow tooth". It was Deputy to the original building a new building in memory of the destruction caused by the conflict. Markets provide access to the building burn some candles in memory of the 12 dead and 50 wounded from the bombing of December 19, 2016. Around this place, theatre of recent or oldest human suffering, it is disturbing to see installed huts to itinerant merchants! It was hoped to find instead a place of contemplation.

  • The church interior is rather converted to the Museum. There's plenty of information about the original construction, destruction and reconstruction (planned). All very informative, other fragments are exhibited and instructive labeled. In the adjacent souvenir shop you can take a look at the old church through a glass plate. The new Bell Tower, as well as the new building not liking visually at all. I personally take the ruins the effect space. Very successful, however, I find the Memorial for the terrorist attack on the rear of the building.

  • The replacement building for the destroyed Church Mystic works through the blue stained glass Windows. An oasis of tranquility on the vibrant Ku' Damm. Worth a visit!

  • This remembrance Church was bombed during the second World War and is currently under going a face lift and minor structural repair work. The new church is splendid in itself, truly lovely, light a candle for lost loved ones and say a little prayer or thoughts for them. Outside the new church are some engraved steps in memory of those who tragically lost their lives in the awful Christmas tragedy when a truck drove into the Christmas Market. Take time to look into the memorial messages.
  • Though it was not really an old church when it was destroyed during WW II, the church is a testimonial to the ravages of war. It is free and has a small museum explaining its short history and containing some art. There is a newer bell tower built after the war as well as a very modern church right behind it. It takes at most 45min to explore the exhibit. It is located very close to the KaDeWe department store so easy to kill 2 birds with one stone.
  • Love this church. Destroyed in WW2 and left as a memorial. It sticks out like a broken tooth amongst the posh towering hotels on the KuDamm. I was there when the European athletics were on in August 2018. There is a newer church now beside the damaged tower that is awful to look at.
  • Preserved church to demonstrate the destruction during WW2. Eerie in a way but also impressive to view inside.
  • The war damaged Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is an iconic image of Berlin. What surprised me were the beautiful mosaics inside which covered the walls and ceiling. I had assumed there would be an simple interior but it's almost like a byzantine church. Inside there are some exhibits and a history of the church. Definitely worth a visit.
