Kathe Kollwitz Museum, Berlin

4.5
#43 of 194 in Museums in Berlin
Containing one of the largest collections of works by the German artist and pacifist Kathe Kollwitz, Kathe Kollwitz Museum displays more than 200 prints, drawings, posters, sculptures, and woodcuts. Opened in 1986, the museum traces its origins to art collector Hans Pels-Leusden, who bought many of the artist's works for decades and staged the first Kollwitz exhibit in 1965. Kollwitz lived in Berlin for more than 50 years and created some of her most memorable works there, including her celebrated self-portraits. The museum is inside a 19th-century villa that was partially destroyed during World War II. Be sure to explore the upper floor, which contains a 2 m (6.6 ft) statue of Kollwitz by sculptor Gustav Seitz. • This is an artist that understands women and children and hardship. There are some really moving pictures and sculptures of mothers protecting their children.
  • No other artist conveys human anxst like Kathe Kollwitz. She has always been a hero of mine. This is a great small museum well worth visiting.
