Mauermuseum - Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin

2.3
Mauermuseum - Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie was German's only Cold War border crossing that permitted foreigners to pass through between 1961 and 1990. Though it once represented the separation of East and West Germany, this spot is now just one of the city's many tourist attractions. The checkpoint achieved mythological status because residents of the city were not allowed to use it. Look for the famous "You Are Now Leaving the American Sector" sign. This iconic marker of the past is one of the most photographed spots in the city. Nearby, you can explore the exhibits of a private museum dedicated to the checkpoint and various Berlin Wall memorabilia. • Although today one can guess a show for tourists as it went once there. The Museum next door you should look at in any case, there is well documented. To compensate, the Trabi Museum is right to recommend the corner.

  • There's certainly not much to see, but it's part of the story! Not to mention that the wall was right there at the time and so they put qques pieces along the street.

  • Of course you can't deny the historical relevance of the place so in that mind worth visiting, but don't expect too much. Just a small cabin in the middle of the street and some actors portraying as U...  more »

  • The museum is potentially one of the greatest. The amount of objects, pictures, description is huge, almost overwhelming. I give 5 star for the precious encapsulation of such a piece of history. However this great amount of material is poorly organized. They need a good curator. A lot of things laid out sometimes without any sort of criteria. I spent 3 hours there, really enjoyed but maybe even too much in little space. Worst of the worse, the audio guide (used the Italian, maybe the English is a little better) the number / rooms of the audio guide would describe something that was in another room 😂 then you exit directly on the street so you can potentially take the audio guide (which is an ipod) with you. I went back in to drop it and told the lady the issue and that they should implement security, she was so surprised... 😮
  • Place is too hyped. Too much text, and it seems to me, that very little has been updated since I visited 19 years ago. They charge for allowing tourists to take pictures of the exhibition. There seems to be little or no air conditioning, and the only thing that has been given any thought into customer experience, seems to be the gift shop. Furthermore someone, claiming to be deaf roamed the museum, trying to collect money. Clearly nothing official, but neither that, nor the photography clearance, seemed to be monitored in any way.
  • The museum was cheap with the option of a guided tour or to enter on your own. Each artifact had a thorough description including the history behind it. It was a decent sized museum and the artifacts it contained were very good. Only downside to the museum is that it wasn't great with sign posts so people might get a bit confused at times.
  • Didn't go into the museum. They were completely out of English pamphlets that told the story of it. They had LOTS of every other language, but no English. That's poor management of the facility. They could easily have more printed up and stocked in a day of they wanted to. Sadly, that's not how it works over here.
  • There is a lot to see, which is good. But the way it is shown quickly becomes overwhelming, which is bad. It’s a little cramped and you can’t really read out all the info (it would take you long even if you didn’t have people pushing you). For a thorough history of the east-west conflict there is so much material here that you get a good grip on that part of history
