Pfaueninsel, Berlin

#2 of 16 in Nature in Berlin
Situated along the River Havel and only accessible by a small ferry, the nature reserve of Pfaueninsel makes up part of the World Heritage Site of the Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin. The island, named after the free-roaming peacocks that live here, feels a world away from Germany's bustling capital. Besides its colorful feathered residents, the park is home to a number of other attractions, including a striking white medieval-style palace built by Friedrich Wilhelm II from 1794 to 1797. Admire the architecture and wander the grounds, where you can encounter a range of fauna alongside the peacocks. Snack shacks are located near the ferry drop-off. • With the boat a minute, best pricey therefore. We walk wonderfully in the beautiful nature with landscaped paths and a strange castle. The Rose Garden is beautiful and it is good to stay along the beautiful paths.

  • Peacock Island is a great park for walking. Even children don't get bored with water proximity and brisk boat traffic. The namesake peacocks can be obtained both on a freewheeling basis and in enclosures for the view, some specimens are quite impressive. For the little hunger in between, there is a small snack at a lawn. The offer is neat, but the prices are not quite cheap (bratwurst €3.50, Boulette €4.00). For that, it was very fast even at lunchtime. The "castle" on the island was closed for renovation, but it looks better in photos than in real. If you stand close, you can already see clearly that it is a Ruin-style replica ...

  • amazing little island! so much to explore, we really enjoyed the trip to the Pfaueninsel. We went in wintertime, i can imagine that i can be quite crowded during summer. anyway, definitely worth a visit!
  • I like this island. Not very big but mostl quiet and nice nature. A little too crowded for my taste in special in season but ok... minus: Birds in cages... I would not need the birds.
