Situated along the River Havel and only accessible by a small ferry, the nature reserve of Pfaueninsel makes up part of the World Heritage Site of the Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin. The island, named after the free-roaming peacocks that live here, feels a world away from Germany's bustling capital. Besides its colorful feathered residents, the park is home to a number of other attractions, including a striking white medieval-style palace built by Friedrich Wilhelm II from 1794 to 1797. Admire the architecture and wander the grounds, where you can encounter a range of fauna alongside the peacocks. Snack shacks are located near the ferry drop-off. A bit off the beaten track on the outskirts of the city presents the Pfaueninsel as absolute oasis of peace and relaxation. By bus or car to get to the parking lot, with the passenger ferry to reach the island after a short ride. You can go here ausgiebing and has always new views of the water. Peacocks roam free until in the late summer and hit a wheel to the delight of visitors. Major destination is little castle.View original -

How to get there with a nostalgia bus from Wannsee S-Bahn stop, then with a ferry after few minutes arrival on the quiet island. A haven of tranquillity after a stressful Deutscher Städtetag. Unfortunately, our expectations were slightly higher, the beautiful birds were rather scarce. Great location, beautiful views.View original

Pleasant couple of hours walking on the island. Crossing is easy with a regular ferry. One small disappointment: we only saw one single peacock walking around, which wasn't in a cage.

This was a real treat for me. I got to see so much on the way there from Berlin Mitte. I ended up at country town with a very old feel. Take the next bus down a forest trail road down to the ferry across the narrow stretch to the island. Immediately I'm taking pictures of decorated gardens when I'm approached by a local peacock. They are extremely comfortable and will even eat from your hand, though local advise to leave well alone. Do it anyway, make memories with the birds, bread won't hurt them. Also, the palace and ancient yacht house are nice as well as the Greek looking alter and farm houses. Other stuff too you can go inside during your hours/days.
