Topography of Terror, Berlin

4.5
#2 of 184 in Museums in Berlin
Often chilling and always thought-provoking, Topography of Terror is an indoor and outdoor museum documenting the terror tactics used by the Nazi regime. You'll receive sobering insights into the Gestapo and SS activities that kept the city in a permanent state of terror and repression between 1933 and 1945. If visiting between spring and fall, don't miss the most striking of the site's features: an excavated cellar directly under the remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall. Many political prisoners were tortured and executed here (confirm on the website that the exhibit is open during your visit). You can visit three permanent exhibits about the Nazi years at the site's prize-winning documentation center, which opened in 2010. Explore the site on your own, or join a guided walking tour to learn about the Nazi policies at home and the Cold War tensions felt around the world. • It's there to stay alive in the memory of each person who by there passes the Division that this wall provided for the city and for the German people.

  • Set aside a few hours for the site visit. It really is fantastic and reproduction of the history of the war reported through photos and videos. Pass quietly by the stands and see what really happened. Unfortunately many people despise the story and defending the Nazi ideals.

  • Take at least a whole morning or afternoon to go see this Museum ( if you really are into this part of history, that is). It’s an interesting experience and definitely worth to see both the material and the ground itself. There are lockers available to put your things (you only need to put a coin and you get it back when you are done) and written material available for purchase; if you get there early you can also grab audio guides in different languages. The experience is FREE of charge.
  • An important museum to visit. I found the photos of the victims to be powerful and those of the perpetrators to be unexpectedly enlightening. I hope in the future they will add artifacts and more deeply explore the stories of all involved.
