Topography of Terror, Berlin

4.5
#1 of 183 in Museums in Berlin
Often chilling and always thought-provoking, Topography of Terror is an indoor and outdoor museum documenting the terror tactics used by the Nazi regime. You'll receive sobering insights into the Gestapo and SS activities that kept the city in a permanent state of terror and repression between 1933 and 1945. If visiting between spring and fall, don't miss the most striking of the site's features: an excavated cellar directly under the remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall. Many political prisoners were tortured and executed here (confirm on the website that the exhibit is open during your visit). You can visit three permanent exhibits about the Nazi years at the site's prize-winning documentation center, which opened in 2010. Explore the site on your own, or join a guided walking tour to learn about the Nazi policies at home and the Cold War tensions felt around the world. • A visit to this museum to have a (very!) comprehensive vision of the rise of the nazi party and the way which it methodically structured its progress and its grip. The site covers the period from 1933 until the post-war period. The exhibition is very well done, extremely rich in photos and chilling administrative documents factual nature, is summarizing disembodied accounting. Feels as and as our progress among the chapters of the exhibition, the no less irresistible progress of a nameless horror. A book is available in several languages, for €20. I'm sorry to not have it taken so it seemed complete for this price :-). Accuracy: the information is provided in German and English only. Ah! Last thing: admission is free, which is surprising considering the quality and completeness of the site. Bravo.

  • It is a free Museum full of photos, videos, testimonials, biographies... On the persecution of the Jews and Gypsies, both in Germany and in Poland, the Netherlands, Italy... Outside there is a part of the Berlin wall which remains intact. Everything is in German and English, so if you do not control any of these languages it is not much worth going.

  • Take at least a whole morning or afternoon to go see this Museum ( if you really are into this part of history, that is). It’s an interesting experience and definitely worth to see both the material and the ground itself. There are lockers available to put your things (you only need to put a coin and you get it back when you are done) and written material available for purchase; if you get there early you can also grab audio guides in different languages. The experience is FREE of charge.
  • An important museum to visit. I found the photos of the victims to be powerful and those of the perpetrators to be unexpectedly enlightening. I hope in the future they will add artifacts and more deeply explore the stories of all involved.
  • Couldn't believe something this well-done was free. Very informative and sobering. Educational. Lots of reading. Good amount of pictures as well though. Half outdoors, half indoors.
  • A wonderful explanation of the history of dictatorship in Germany, the war and the wall. Very informative but in a relatively simple form, plenty of pictures. Large section of wall 75 too. Highly recommend to any travelers looking for information. Not a fun and vibey tourist stop however.
  • Important place to visit. Really explains how nazi Germany came to be, but certainly doesn't justify it. Very tastefully done with exceptional imagery and media that is not often seen elsewhere. If it's a warm day get there early or use sun cream. Much of it is outside. It's free though and absolutely worth the visit.
