Admire ancient gompas and exquisite silk embroidery murals at Lamayuru Monastery (Yuru Gompa), a Tibetan Buddhist monastery complex perched atop a huge rock. Cut in the hillside at 3,510 m (11,520 ft), the monastery offers fabulous views of the surrounding snow-capped Lamayuru Mountains and Indus River. Founded by Naropa in the early 11th century, the complex once housed 400 monks. Impressive murals inside the complex show a blend of Tibetan and Indian art and you will see many butter lamps and elaborate carpets in well-preserved ancient meditation cavities. Ornate frescoes and numerous intensely colored statues adorn its richly decorated halls.     Leh was quite different in 2019 in comparison of last 9 years... I didn't seen snow at Namikla,Fotula etc... But in 2019, i seen snow fall at lamayuru also, which is considered to be at low...  more »

    If you are biking to Leh via Srinagar -Kargil then Lamayuru is a nice stop where you van rest as well as visit the monastery.  more »

    One of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh. The place has an aura about itself. The landscape around the monastery is moonscape like. The views from the monastery are just great. There is an entry fee of Rs 50/- for Indian nationals. There is a restaurant adjoin the monastery where one can relish freshly made eats.
