Perched on a hill, Basgo gompa is renowned for its gilded Buddha statue and colorful murals depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha. Tibetan king Grags-pa-'bum and his descendants, the Namgyal rulers, built the citadel and the three temples dedicated to the Maitreya Buddha--the Buddha of the future--in the 16th and 17th centuries. The scenic location offers plenty of photo opportunities and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain landscape.     I really enjoyed my visit to this monastery. It is situated in a stunning location and the views alone are worth the trip to go there. It’s small with limit viewing but spectacular nonetheless.  more »
