Chemre Gompa Monastery, Leh

#7 of 22 in Historic Sites in Leh
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Chemre Gompa Monastery remains best known for its one-story high statue of Padmasambhava and a valuable collection of scriptures written in silver and gold. Perched on a rocky outcropping overlooking the Chemre Valley, it looks like a medieval Italian hill town. The peaceful ambience is rarely disturbed by tourists, and the museum on the top floor showcases a fine selection of paintings. Every year in the 9th month of the Tibetan calendar, the monastery comes to life during the festival of sacred dances. The uphill trek that leads to the monastery can be completed in half an hour.
