Museum of History of Lithuanian Medicine and Pharmacy
The Museum of the History of Lithuanian Medicine and Pharmacy is located in a restored 16th-century building at the Town Hall Square in the Old Town of Kaunas, Lithuania. It moved to its current location in 1987, although its history dates to 1936. Alfonsas Kaikaris, a professor of pharmacy, is credited as the founder of the museum; his personal collection formed the basis of its holdings. The Lithuanian Pharmacists' Union worked to collect materials as well. It is sponsored by Kaunas University of Medicine.Plan your Museum of History of Lithuanian Medicine and Pharmacy visit and explore what else you can see and do in Kaunas using our Kaunas online driving holiday planner.
The museum's permanent collection consists of the belongings of Lithuanian doctors, pharmacists and hospitals, along with medical and pharmaceutical implements and documents. Temporary exhibitions commemorate prominent doctors' and pharmacists' anniversaries. The exhibits include dental equipment along with displays of archaic medications such as “Erektosan”, love potions, “Venus Hair Potion,” and “Caput Mortuum” .
There one could enjoy the scenes of pre-history of medicine and pharmacy – watching exhibition stands arranged with great inventiveness and authenticity: presenting a shaman curing a baby as well as a Lithuanian sorceress.

The Museum on the History of Lithuanian Medicine and Pharmacy has a small but impressive collection. The setting of the museum is very well done - definitely give this a try if you have 30 minutes to an hour. (In any case, at €2 you cannot go wrong.)

The most interesting museum I have ever been to. Just after coming in authentic building and friendly personnel meets you. Lots of exhibits dating from 1000 years old till ones of 20th century. The cost is also ridiculously low. Just 1€ for students and 2€ for adults. During the visit I was constantly narrated about history of medice and pharmycy which was much more interesting, than just reading information tables. Also even thought I am not pharmasist or doctor the museum managed to really engage me with lots of bizarre facts and stories. Truly big thanks for the dedicated staff. I recommend to visit this museum for anyone who is in Kaunas. Undoubtedly one of a kind.
