Casemates du Bock, Luxembourg City

4.2
Part of a World Heritage Site, Casemates du Bock once played a key role in a network of defensive underground passages. Originally stretching for over 20 km (12.5 mi), the honeycombed passageways housed garrisons of soldiers defending the city, along with their horses, weapons, and other essential equipment. Constructed in the mid-18th century, the casemates provided a shelter for nearly 40,000 locals during World War II. After exploring the city's underground history, enjoy sweeping views from the top of the casements. Expect lots of stairs and prepare for your walk by wearing a pair of comfortable shoes. • I don't advise you to get in. You'd only see empty tunnels with faces. But you can have the same view from above without going in. Seven euros thrown away.

  • A Unesco World Heritage Site, these underground tunnels open on beautiful views of the historic city and the European city are worth a visit.

  • A great part of a city walk through Luxembourg. Excellent maintained, though some steeper parts are necessary to traverse, generally it easy to do. Last time was about 13 years ago. The only difference is what part is being restored. In other words timeless and as clean as it was back then. Luxembourg is a great city that is easy accessible, plenty of interesting stores, restaurants and historical features mixed
  • Very cool to explore all the nooks and crannies. If you find an open door with a narrow staircase, just go for it and see where it ends up. Good job with added safety lighting and handrails that don't detract from the historic character.
