Westerplatte, Gdansk

4.3
Once home to a spa complex and baths, Westerplatte was also home to a Polish military transit depot. Today the ruins of a World War II battle fought over this depot serves as a museum, and a totem-like monument stands tall on the peninsula. Carvings on the side pay homage to the Polish soldiers who died defending the piece of land. In fact, the peninsula is filled with memorials: some gravestones, some ruins of barracks. Each monument can be reached on foot or by water taxi along the coast. Using our international travel planner, Gdansk attractions like Westerplatte can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • A must-see in Gdansk at least once. No explanation is given on the spot in French or English only in Polish but the place is enough to imagine what could have been played here.

  • It was nice to see a lot of schoolchildren with their teachers on the second day of school at the place from which the Second World War began. In addition to the obelisk there are remnants of guard posts from which the Poles tried to resist the Germans. Explanatory panels describe the phases of those first days. A place of great emotional impact.

  • The place itself is very nice and clean. You can learn a lot of you speak English or Polish. The view from the top is okay, you mainly see the port. The toilets situation could be a bit better. There will be a bigger exhibition too. I'd like to visit again once it opened.
  • Very nice park with national historical significance, with a wild beach (unsupervised). Food and drink options are limited though, so it's best to bring your own or plan accordingly.
