Located at the heart of Moscow, Red Square offers easy access to most of the city's major attractions. Surrounded by landmark buildings representative of Moscow's rich architectural heritage, the vast square is the first destination for most visitors to the city. Its name comes not from the color of the cobbles or its link to communist history, but from one interpretation of the Russian word "krasniy," meaning "beautiful." Most of the city's major streets originate from this square, but the majority of tourists come to this World Heritage Site to take pictures and visit the surrounding buildings, including a mausoleum housing the embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin. Planning Moscow trip won't be overwhelming when you use Inspirock's itinerary maker.

There's a real sense of history, the massive square framed by Kremlin walls and GUM store, with St Basil's Cathedral at the far end and Lenin's Mauseleum. Its a huge space, containing a skating rink..... more »

Warm heart of my hometown. Red square is my favorite place in the city. And word “red” means “beautiful”. Every week I visit it - it’s my tradition. I advice to visit it during early morning (5 am - 10 am) and deep evening (9 pm - 1 am). Only at this time you can feel the magic of Red Square and the breath of history. It’s very powerful and magnificent place so enjoy every moment here. Red walls of Kremlin, elegant St. Basil Cathedral, monumental mausoleum of V.Lenin, luxurious GUM shopping and cultural center and of course grey paving stones of Red Square - all is here. P.S. it’s especially beautiful during winter “New Year” festival.

Just came back from a trip in late January when it had snowed and was around 1° during the day but -6° in the evening. I personally found it very picturesque particularly in the evening when it got dark since the lights of GUM and St Basil's are turned on that complement it. Pretty open so it was windy walking around, recommend a scarf or windproof cagoule. Quick access to the metro and the shops too so during the winter period you can duck into one of them to warm up.
