For a classic train experience in the Alps, hop on Gornergrat, one of the highest railway lines in Europe. Opened in 1898, the railway takes sightseers and hikers from the resort village of Zermatt to the very top of a rocky ridge in the western part of the Alps. The first electric rack railway built in Switzerland, the line passes through a popular skiing area, noted for its 29 peaks reaching above 4,000 m (13,000 ft) in elevation. On clear days the line's terminus at the top of the ridge offers unbeatable views of the surrounding mountaintops, as well as the second largest glacier in the Alps. • When you are getting higher and closer to the top of the mountains, your scenery and views are great.  more »
  • I was staying at a hotel near Tsuermatt Station, so I purchased a round-trip ticket before boarding. Round trip is 114 francs (half fair and half price). You can stop over many times, but you can't ride in the same section. It is not possible to specify a seat. I got on the 9 o'clock train at Twellat, but the japanese tour was full. It was very nice to be able to talk to an elderly Japanese couple who came on tour in the same seat as us until we got to the end. Fun story and great scenery. It was a very good memory. We parted ways with them at the top, and on our way back we got off at Rothenboden station, hiked to Luffelse, and took another train from Riffelberg station back to Zermatt. It was a wonderful day.
