An ancient town center surrounded by medieval ramparts, Avignon is a major city of Provence and a Mediterranean city in the Vaucluse department on the left bank of the Rhône River.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Palais des Papes and Musee Europeen de l'Aviation de Chasse. Musee du Petit Palais and St-Trophime Cloister (Cloitre St-Trophime) will appeal to history buffs. Get out of town with these interesting Avignon side-trips: Eglise St-Trophime (in Arles), Moulin de Daudet (in Fontvieille) and Chateau de Tarascon (in Tarascon).
