Built on seven hills, Lisbon has experienced a renaissance in recent years, making it the cultural star of Portugal.
Mosteiro dos Jeronimos and Park and National Palace of Pena will appeal to history buffs. Head to Museu Calouste Gulbenkian and Rossio Squarefor plenty of shopping. Go for a jaunt from Lisbon to Sintra to see Quinta da Regaleira about 36 minutes away. The adventure continues: step into the grandiose world of Castelo de S. Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Head to Palacio da Bolsa and Livraria Lellofor plenty of shopping. Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral) and Capela das Almas will appeal to history buffs. Step out of Porto to go to Braga and see Bom Jesus do Monte, which is approximately 52 minutes away. There's lots more to do: snap pictures at Ponte de Dom Luis I, tour the pleasant surroundings at Cais da Ribeira, pause for some serene contemplation at Torre dos Clerigos, and appreciate the history behind Monumento aos Herois da Guerra Peninsular.
