The riverside capital of Laos, Vientiane still has a relatively small urban area and a laid-back, relaxed feel to it.
Take a break from Vientiane with a short trip to Nam Ngum Dam in Thalat, about 1h 40 min away. There's still lots to do: enjoy breathtaking views from Patuxai, walk around Buddha Park, contemplate the long history of Great Sacred Stupa (Pha That Luang), and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Wat Si Saket.
