Gaze across the plains of Troy (Truva), where Odysseus once left the proverbial wooden horse in one of the most cunning war hoaxes in history. This World Heritage Site was the center of ancient civilizations from the early Bronze Age until Roman times. Driven by his childhood obsession with Homer's epic, German businessman Heinrich Schliemann excavated the remains of nine historical civilizations in the 1870s. Walk along the remnants of rough ancient walls and across a paved chariot ramp. With your imagination and the help of a guide you can picture how the famed city from The Iliad appeared. The layer of Roman Ilium is best-preserved with its bouleuterion (the city council) and a small theater. Kids will enjoy examining the mock Trojan horse in front of the entrance. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Canakkale holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Troy (Truva) and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.
