Pripyat Amusement Park, Pripyat

#1 of 26 in Theme Parks in Ukraine
Theme Park · Water / Amusement Park
The Pripyat amusement park is an abandoned amusement park located in Pripyat, Ukraine. It was to have its grand opening on 1 May 1986, in time for the May Day celebrations, but these plans were cancelled on 26 April, when the Chernobyl disaster occurred a few kilometers away. Several sources report that the park was opened for a short time on 27 April before the announcement to evacuate the city was made, and one site shows photos of the amusement park in operation. Theories that the park was hurriedly opened in the aftermath of the accident to distract Pripyat residents from the unfolding disaster nearby seem to be substantiated by video showing that some of the rides were never fully completed (the Paratrooper was not fitted with canopies and the Ferris wheel's cladding was incomplete). It is more likely and generally held that the video was taken in winter, due to clothing worn, and it was a test. Considering the lack of panic at the time of evacuation, there was no need to distract people. In any case, the park—and its Ferris wheel in particular—have become a symbol of the Chernobyl disaster.

  • A surreal place to see and visit. Undoubtedly it was once a special place for a good reason, now, due to radiation risks, you take care to touch as little as possible  more »
  • After reactor number 4 itself the ferris wheel is the icon of Chernobyl. This amusement park is a must see in the 10km Chernobyl exclusion zone, that´s why it´s in all tour programs so do not worry.....  more »
  • I visited here as part of 1 day tour of Chernobyl and in some ways this maybe the most haunting part of it. It was never used and was due to open a few days after the accident. The Ferris wheel also had the highest radioactive reading so careful.
  • Purchase a ticket and enjoy your ride. However you’ll remember that for the whole life (which won’t be long after a round trip on a wheel)
