Riviera of the North
Germany's largest island, Rugen features 574 km (356.7 mi) of coastline. Originally a peaceful getaway, the island rose to popularity near the turn of the 20th century among upper-class Germans, including Otto von Bismarck. Though still popular as a vacation spot, the island is large enough that you'll have no problem finding a low-key corner of your own. Home to many resort towns and centers, Rugen residents and visitors partake in plenty of outdoor adventuring, such as horseback riding and yachting. Foodies will especially like the high-quality seafood in nearly every restaurant.
